The Addams Family's Top Scary Flick Picks!

October 15th, 2012

Hey DSM Fans!

Tomorrow begins our 3rd and Final week of THE ADDAMS FAMILY! We can’t believe that the show is almost over – just 8 more performances left!

In honor of THE ADDAMS FAMILY and with Halloween just around the corner, we wanted to kick off this week with a screamingly fun celebration of this family’s favorite haunted holiday. We asked Wednesday, Lurch, Gomez, Grandma, and Fester what their top scary flick pick was. Check out what they had to say!

WEDNESDAY: “A recent series that scares the daylights out of me has to be the Twilight saga. Fang-free vampires that produce more swoons than screams? *shudder* It makes my blood run cold…”

LURCH: “errruuggghhh…Wolf Man…ururhghg…hooooowwwwwlllll…urururghgh….”

GOMEZ: “Every Halloween, we have a scary movie marathon at the Addams abode. This year’s line up: Sleepless in Seattle, Serendipity, You’ve Got Mail, and horror of horrors, Pretty Woman.”

GRANDMA: “I’ll always have a soft spot for Bela Lugosi. We had a little fling when he stared on the Broadway production of Dracula in 1927. The scariest of the lot would have to be his later work with Ed Wood.

FESTER: “I’m a fan of all Halloween movies, because so much revolves around the pull of my lunar love, The Moon. Werewolves howl to her. Vampires will be toast under the sun’s harsh rays. It all leaves me glowing!”

*What’s your favorite scary flick pick? Leave your comment below!

Have you seen THE ADDAMS FAMILY yet? If so, make sure you comment on our Facebook page or give us a quick tweet here – we want to know what you think! Haven’t seen THE ADDAMS FAMILY yet? If not, it’s not too late! For tickets and more information, visit www.dallassummermusicals.org.

The Man Behind The Family – Charles Addams

September 24th, 2012

A very un-happy miserable Monday to you, DSM Fans.
(We’re getting in the mood for THE ADDAMS FAMILY around here.)

Did you know THE ADDAMS FAMILY – THE BROADWAY MUSICAL was inspired by the original cartoons? Below is an article about the original creator of what we know and love today as THE ADDAMS FAMILY.

The musical The Addams Family is inspired by the creations of the legendary American cartoonist Charles Addams, who lived from 1912 until 1988. In 1933, when he was just 21, his work was published in The New Yorker, and over the course of nearly six decades, he became one of the magazine’s most cherished contributors. (For a few of his cartoons, see the slideshow at the bottom of this post.)

Bizarre, macabre and weird are all words that have been used to describe Charles Addams’ cartoons. Yet adjectives such as charming, enchanting and tender can just as accurately be employed to depict the same body of work, as well as the man himself. His unique style and wonderfully crafted cartoons enabled his work to transcend such dichotomies for his millions of fans worldwide.

Charles Addams is most widely known for his characters that came to be called The Addams Family, a group that evolved into multiple television shows, motion pictures and now this Broadway musical. Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Wednesday, Pugsley, Grandma and Lurch existed in various forms and aspects of Addams’ cartoons dating back to the 1930s but were not actually named by him until the early 1960s, when the television series was created. Surprisingly, The Addams Family characters appear in only a small number of the artist’s several thousand works. The majority of his cartoons are occupied by hundreds of other characters, but there is little doubt that those that come to life on this stage are his most beloved creations.

Over 15 books of his drawings have been published around the world, including the new collection, The Addams Family: An Evilution, the first complete history of The Addams Family, including more than 200 cartoons, many never previously published. The collection also includes Addams’ own incisive character descriptions (originally penned for the benefit of the television show producers) that remind us where these oddly lovable characters came from and, in doing so, offer a lasting tribute to one of America’s greatest humorists.

THE ADDAMS FAMILY – THE BROADWAY MUSICAL is on stage here in Dallas, October 2 – 21st at the Music Hall at Fair Park. This show is during The State Fair of Texas – your ticket to the show gets you into the Fair for FREE on the same day as your performance! This is a show you don’t want to miss. For tickets and more information, visit www.dallassummermusicals.org.

We hope to see you at the show and the Fair!

FROM THE BACK ROW: THE STATE FAIR BUZZ

September 21st, 2012

Hey DSM Fans!

As many of you know the State Fair of Texas opens one week from today. I know for myself and like many of you, we’re all excited to see all of the new and wonderful things that are coming to the State Fair of Texas this year. When I think of the State Fair of Texas I think of the Fried Foods, The Auto Shows, Big Tex and of course Fletcher’s Famous Corny Dogs.  This year the Fried Foods are bigger and better with tasty new treats such as Deep Fried Mac-N-Cheese Sliders, Chicken Fried Cactus Bites, Fried Mexican Fire Crackers, Fried Bacon Cinnamon Rolls, Fried Cotton Candy, Fried Sugar, Fried Kitty Kat (Kit Kat Bars), Fried Cow Patty, The Cup of Trash Plate, Picnic on a Stick and The Big Tex Choice Award Winner for Fried Foods….Deep Fried Jambalaya. If none of those sound appetizing, don’t worry because I’m sure a Deep Fried Red Velvet Cupcake, a Deep Fried Chicken and Waffle, a Deep Fried Baked Potato or an El Dogito on a Stick will do the job.

During the State Fair, The Chevrolet Main Stage will be hosting free concerts with fair admission for musicals artists such as Kevin Fowler, Uncle Kracker, Bridget Mendler, The Commodores, Kellie Pickler and Kevin Costner with Modern West all month long. Other events include The Chinese Lantern Festival, Creative Arts Shows, Celebrity Kitchen Shows, The Starlight Parade, Illumination Sensation, Birds Of The World, The 2013 State Fair Auto Show, The Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic Football Game, The Livestock Show and Auction, The Agriculture Show, The AT&T Red Rivalry Football Game and of course The Addams Family showing here at The Music Hall at Fair Park. Also, if you buy a ticket to The Addams Family you will receive free admission into the State Fair for that day.

The State Fair of Texas is one of the most delightful and entertaining places for people of all ages. I hope to see all of you in line for a corny dog and then off to the Music Hall at Fair Park for The Addams Family…there goes the neighborhood. Don’t worry we’ll keep the lights off for you.

FROM THE BACK ROW: BRENT BARRETT

August 7th, 2012

When the Cathy Rigby is PETER PAN tour stopped in Dallas, Haley and I had the distinct privilege to sit down with actor Brent Barrett who plays the mischievous Captain Hook. He not only gave us all the details on the show but on the iconic character as well. Needless to say it was quite an adventure listening to all the incredible things going on within this show and now it is time for the DSM fans to learn more about Brent Barrett and this remarkable show.

Where did you go to college? Started at Fort Hayes State University, but transferred to Carnegie Mellon University

You opened Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular, starring in the title role for two years.  What’s it like to perform for Vegas audiences?

It’s great, it’s funny…  Everyone is sitting out in the audience with their sippy-cups or their really tall drinks [the drinks people buy out on the strip].  The production was so elaborate it was amazing to be a part of it.

*Boris [Brent’s dog] runs in*

What is your dream role / show to perform in?

I’d still really like to do Man of La Mancha

We love you as Captain Hook, was there any specific inspiration for your take on such an iconic character?

Well, I just did Hannibal Lectorbefore this, so I think it was a progression [laughing]

Who is your Favorite director that you have ever worked with?  Michael Blakemore – Kiss Me Kate

What’s it like to be terrified of a ticking crocodile?

Oh it’s silly and fun, so much fun.

*Boris is curled up asleep on the couch*

What made you want to be an actor?

Growing up in Kansas, I didn’t even know you could be an actor as a profession.  One night, the Ed Sullivan Show was on.  Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet were singing selections from Camelot, and I think that’s when I knew.  My aunt also owned a movie theater so I got to see movies all the time.

Pictured above are Brent Barrett and his dog Boris doing tricks in the auditorium.

Brent and Boris were an absolute blast to hang out with and we were so thrilled for the opportunity to meet and chat with such an amazing actor. Have a great day DSM fans!!!

Backstage at Mamma Mia!

June 1st, 2012

Hi DSM Fans!

I wanted to share with you some interesting facts about backstage for Mamma Mia! A special thank you to one of our awesome interns Luke for getting all this info for you all to enjoy!

DID YOU KNOW…

That each actor/actress goes through at least 4 to 6 costume changes in one show.

That most broadway actors come 30 minutes before the show starts and that is called half hour.

Backstage there is an area that is directly focused to stretching and yoga, to warm up their bodies for their performances.

That every lead role has two under studies and that every role in the musical is backed up by someone else.

The actors know every line of the musical, because they never know when they have to fill in for each other.

Whenever the ensemble is not on stage, they sing in sound booths on each side of the stage for background vocals.

On a national tour, it takes the crew 6 to 8 hours to set up the stage in every city that they go to and it starts the day of the opening show…impressive.

The cast flies everywhere unless the next city is 4 hours or less, then they drive in a bus.

For Mamma Mia costumes there are crews that clean, iron and sew things everyday so that each costume is fresh for each show.

That every lead principal has a person behind stage that is on the wings of the stage just for costume changes.

Mamma Mia! is on stage here in Dallas ONLY through Sunday! Check out www.dallassummermusicals.org/shows_mammamia.shtm for more details! Don’t miss this great show while it’s here!

Mamma Mia Returns to Dallas!

May 9th, 2012

MAMMA MIA!
WALKS DOWN THE AISLE OF THE
MUSIC HALL AT FAIR PARK

THE GLOBAL SMASH HIT WILL RETURN
TO DALLAS SUMMER MUSICALS
FOR ONE WEEK ONLY!

Dallas, TX….Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ MAMMA MIA!, the smash hit musical based on the songs of ABBA, returns to the Music Hall at Fair Park, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals for one week only May 29-June 3, 2012.

Seen by over 50 million people around the world, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus’ global smash hit musical MAMMA MIA!, is celebrating over 4,000 performances in its tenth smash hit year at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre and remains among Broadway’s top selling musicals. The current North American Tour has played over 3,700 performances in over 150 cities with 145 repeat visits. The original West End production of MAMMA MIA! is now in its thirteenth year and has celebrated over 5,000 performances in London and the international tour has visited more than 50 foreign cities and been seen by 4 million people. The blockbuster feature film adaptation of MAMMA MIA!, produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman, is the most successful movie musical of all time grossing $600 million worldwide.

With a worldwide gross of over $2 Billion, MAMMA MIA! is acclaimed by the Associated Press as “quite simply, a phenomenon.”

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna is about to let go of Sophie, the spirited daughter she’s raised alone. For Sophie’s wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends—practical and no-nonsense Rosie and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya – from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna’s past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s songs from “Dancing Queen” and “S.O.S.” to “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me,” MAMMA MIA! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Single tickets for MAMMA MIA! are priced from $15-$75, available through The Box Office, 5959 Royal Lane #542 in the Preston/Royal Shopping Center. Tickets are also available by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. For groups of 10 or more, please call 214-426-GROUP.

Memphis is coming to Dallas!

April 30th, 2012

FOUR-TIME TONY® AWARD WINNER MEMPHIS

IS COMING TO DALLAS

Dallas, TX… MEMPHIS, the 2010 Tony® Award Winner for Best Musical, and the show that’s currently blowing the roof off Broadway, opens at the Music Hall at Fair Park May 15-27, 2012 for a limited engagement, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals.

Single tickets are on sale now, priced from $15-$75, at The Box Office, 5959 Royal Lane, #542 in the Preston/Royal Shopping Center. Tickets are also available by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. For groups of 10 or more, please call 214-426-GROUP.

Critically acclaimed MEMPHIS won four 2010 Tony® Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). MEMPHIS won four Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Performance by an Actress (Montego Glover), Outstanding Music (David Bryan) and Outstanding Orchestration (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). MEMPHIS has also won four Outer Critic Circle Awards including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Score (David Bryan & Joe DiPietro), Outstanding Actress (Montego Glover) and Outstanding Choreography (Sergio Trujillo).

MEMPHIS takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50’s, where a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. MEMPHIS is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever. Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves — filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll.

The show features a brand new Tony winning score with music by Bon Jovi’s founding member and keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change), who also pens the musical’s book. University of North Texas’ College of Business Shines Modern Light on the Business of the Members of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

Presented by Dallas Summer Musicals

(March 2, 2012 – Dallas, TX) Students from the University of North Texas’ College of Business embraced the challenge from Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM) to shine a modern light on the business of MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET’s four rock ‘n’ roll icons: Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, who came together through an auspicious twist of fate on December 4, 1956. Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” who was responsible for launching the careers of each icon, brought the four legendary musicians together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. “These four artists and their musical creations generated a large sum of revenue throughout their lives and beyond,” said Vicki L. Goodwin, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Management, College of Business, University of North Texas. “Putting an exact figure on something like this is difficult, but from our students’ research we found that during the mid-fifties artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis could earn as much as $10,000 per performance; a large sum of money in an era when a new home cost roughly $11,000 (approximately $90,000 today) and a new car cost $1,900 (approximately $16,700 today) (Source: www.thepeoplehistory.com).” Fresh from Broadway, MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET comes to the Music Hall at Fair Park, presented by Dallas Summer Musicals, March 6-18.

In 2013, DSM will continue its 72-year tradition of bringing the Best of Broadway to North Texas, setting the standard in musical theatre entertainment with such terrific straight-from-Broadway musicals as DISNEY’S THE LION KING, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, WICKED, and MARY POPPINS.

Season sponsors for Dallas Summer Musicals are The Dallas Morning News, Metro PCS, WFAA TV Channel 8, American Airlines, and Texas Instruments.

As a nonprofit organization, DSM relies on a variety of funding sources to bring the Best of Broadway to Dallas at affordable ticket prices, as well as to preserve the beautiful historic theater, educate young audiences and create important community programs. DSM’s Seats for Kids program provides a meaningful arts education experience to thousands of low income, at-risk and special needs children. DSM provides positive incentives for youth that are at risk for gang membership through the Stage Right program.

In addition, the Dallas Summer Musicals Academy of Performing Arts offers professional theatre arts training and scholarships to talented students in need. Ticket sales alone do not sustain these endeavors. Only support from committed businesses, foundations and individuals make these programs possible.
